Chanel Style

This fall saw the opening of the beautiful biopic Coco Before Chanel, starring the lovely Audrey Tautou. Fashion lovers have seen the film, and saw how the iconic fashion designer got her start. Now it's time to pay homage to the pioneering designer by adding elements of lace, tweed, and minimalism into this season's wardrobe.

The Designer

Coco Chanel was an innovator and liberator during a time when fashion design was dominated by male designers, restrictive corset dressing, and over-the-top embellishments. Born Gabrielle Bonheur Chanel in 1883, she transformed women’s fashion, designing clothes that were decidedly for the woman wearing them, not for the man in her life. She did away with corsets, and designed clothes that women could actually move around in.

Coco was inspired by menswear, and simple, minimalist embellishments. She got her start by designing hats that stood in stark contrast to the gaudy and ostentatious designs of the day, and opted for simple lines and textures. She maintained that ‘simplicity is the keynote of all true elegance’.
