In Style Wedding Collection Cd
Atmosphere, the underground hip-hop group composed of Slug and Ant, has returned with When Life Gives You Lemons, You Paint That Shit Gold, a CD that illustrates the intellect and style of the best underground rap artists. While mainstream acts seem content to write about money, women, and . . . well, little else, the new Atmosphere disc is an impressive study of complex, flawed, and realisitc characters.
The duo's past CDs have all possessed a bluesy quality, dwelling on the pain and angst of loves lost, of the end of youthful innocence, and of humans' inhumanity to each other. On their newest release, though, the characters are more varied and complex than those of Atmospere's earlier releases.
The Best Rap Song of the Year
The crowning achievement of the disc is "Yesterday." Over a tight bass line and a sparse piano sample, the lyrics tell the story of a man still coming to terms with the loss of his father. The track should resonate with anyone who has lost a loved one and wishes for one more conversation with that person.
Other characters on the album include a teen mother in a troubled, on-again, off-again relationship with her child's father. Several tracks recount stories of people in unhappy marriages. Other characters in troubled relationships drown their sorrows in alcohol, sex, or illegal drugs.
